On Sept. 9, 1937, the following headline appeared on the front page of the Tomah (Wis.) Monitor-Herald: "Giant Grasshoppers Invade Butts Orchard East of City." The accompanying article gave details of what seeming farce. Apparently, the claims were true and all it took was eating a special plant food developed by farmer A. L. Butts on his apple orchard, The grasshoppers who consumed this elixir grew to an astounding 3 ft. in length!
