Time Has Not Been Kind To These Aging Celebs

February 6, 2023
Life isn't easy on any of us. We may remember celebrities from the way they first appeared on screen but life takes its toll on the rich and famous just as much as it does on each of us. These celebrities have endured the aging process just as all humans must, and the result is that many are not as attractive as they were in their heyday. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it's worth remembering that many of these people still have successful careers despite the ravages of old age — looking older doesn't kill your talent.

From Val Kilmer to Johnny Depp, here are some aging stars who are almost unrecognizable!

Val Kilmer started out on the stage and then moved into acting. His first screen role was in an ABC Afterschool Special starring opposite a young Michelle Pfeiffer back in 1983.

He would go on to star opposite Tom Cruise in Top Gun by the end of the decade and by the mid-1990s, Val Kilmer was considered to be seriously hot property. He famously beat out 1980s pop icon Michael Hutchence of INXS to play Jim Morrison of The Doors in Oliver Stone's Blockbuster movie about the band. His role in Heat with De Niro and Pacino is often considered to be his finest.

While some people have said that the years haven't been kind to Val's waistline, we think he still looks amazing for a man his age. Unfortunately, he's disappeared from the big and small screens. After years of increasing weight, he surprised fans with a dramatic turnaround, claiming on Twitter to be back down to 165 pounds.

And Val's career is over. In fact, he's been performing Citizen Twain which is a play of his own creation and stars only him. He even won a Grammy Award for his spoken word work in 2012. Rumors about a sequel to Top Gun could also be an inspiration for getting back into shape. Looking good, Val!

Sally Struthers, Smoking Hot (Then)

Sally Struthers stole American hearts when she played Gloria Stivic, the daughter of Edith and Archie Bunker, in Norman Lear's groundbreaking sitcom, All in the Family. Though she never expected to land the role at all as it was originally given to Candice Azarra who played Gloria in the pilot episode. Candice was dropped soon after making way for Sally.

Struthers' Gloria was known for her blonde pigtails and defiant attitude in dealing with her opinionated and overbearing father. From then on in, things were plain sailing for Sally as she became one of the best-loved talents in American TV.

It's not fair to expect the years to be kind to everyone but the aging process hasn't stopped Sally from working. She's been a long time advocate for the Christian Children's Fund (now ChildFund) and works to help starving and needy children in developing nations. She also played Dolly in Hello, Dolly! in 2014 which was the musical's 50th-anniversary production.

Struthers has also been satirized twice in TV's South Park in episodes about a starving child named "Starvin' Marvin" The joke revolves around Struthers' overeating in contrast with her endeavors to help people who don't have enough to eat, suggesting that she was hoarding food. She was reportedly saddened by the cruel portrayal, which we can imagine. Ignore the haters, Sally, and continue to be your best self.

Mickey Rourke began his career in comedy in the movie Diner in 1982. While that didn't exactly break new ground it was1986's 9½Weeks and 1987's Angel Heart which showed his acting talent and his willingness to tackle taboo subject matter in his roles brought him to the forefront of stardom.

While tame by today's standards, these films both propelled him as a sex symbol along with his costars, Kim Basinger and Lisa Bonet. In 1991, however, Rourke decided that he'd had enough of acting and quit the silver screen for the boxing ring. He'd trained as a boxer when he was younger. His boxing career lasted three years.

Rourke picked up a few minor acting roles in the '90s when he returned to acting from the boxing ring. Although his face was badly damaged from his time on the fight scene, his incredible talent allowed him to work steadily, often portraying misfits and misunderstood tough guys.

Yet, it wasn't until 2005's Sin City that Rourke had another significant starring role. It was his performance in 2009's The Wrestler that would lead to a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and an Oscar nomination. He's undergone quite a bit of plastic surgery over the years and is now a strikingly handsome older gentleman because of it.

In the 1980s it was hard to go to the movies and not see Kathleen Turner. She had a hugely successful stint as the lead in movies such as Body Heat, Romancing the Stone, Prizzi's Honor, The War of the Roses, and Peggy Sue Got Married. Her smoldering good looks and sultry voice made her the perfect choice when Hollywood was looking to fill the role of femme fatale.

She won the Golden Globe for Best Actress and was nominated for the Academy Award during that decade. She also did the voice over for Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Kathleen Turner's transformation from sex siren into an ordinary person was beyond her control. In the 1990s she developed rheumatoid arthritis, a disease which gave her unbearable, crippling pain and threatened to leave her in a wheelchair.

The medication prescribed for her treatment caused a general weight gain and bloating, which prompted criticism from some people. As it happens to so many women actresses, Turner found herself moved out of the limelight and the acting offers moved from "star" to "mother" or even "grandmother" Luckily, her arthritis has gone into remission in recent years and she has appeared in a number of guest roles throughout the years, including appearances on Friends, Nip/Tuck, and Californication. We're happy that she's looking and feeling better these days!

David Michael Hasselhoff (born July 17, 1952), nicknamed "The Hoff", is an American actor, singer, producer, television personality, and businessman. He has set a Guinness World Record as the most watched man on TV. Hasselhoff first gained recognition on The Young and The Restless (1975–1982), playing the role of Dr. Snapper Foster. His career continued with his leading role as Michael Knight on Knight Rider (1982–1986) and as L.A. County Lifeguard Mitch Buchannon in Baywatch (1989–2000). He also produced Baywatch from the 1990s until 2001 when the series ended with Baywatch Hawaii.

Hasselhoff has appeared in films, including Dodgeball (2004), The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004), Click (2006), and Hop (2011). Before Samuel L. Jackson, Hasselhoff was the first actor to portray the Marvel Comics character Nick Fury in the telefilm Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. (1998). In 2000, he made his Broadway debut in the musical Jekyll & Hyde. Following his debut, he starred in other musicals including Chicago and The Producers.

In 1989, Hasselhoff released the studio album Looking for Freedom which went to triple platinum in Europe, and its lead single went to number one in Germany and Switzerland. Hasselhoff has also worked as a talent show judge on television shows such as America's Got Talent (2006–2009) and Britain's Got Talent (2011).

Hasselhoff's autobiography Making Waves was released in the UK in September 2006. In an interview in April 2006, he said the book would present the "last chapter" regarding controversial elements of his personal life.

In November 2015, Hasselhoff posted a YouTube video in which he announced that he had changed his name to "David Hoff". It was then reported that he was not changing his name; that the video was an excerpt from an upcoming advertising campaign.

On May 3, 2007, a viral video surfaced online of Hasselhoff appearing to be severely drunk inside his home. His daughter, Taylor Ann, who filmed the video, can be heard interrogating him and asking him to stop abusing alcohol. She also warns her father he could be jeopardizing his spot on the Las Vegas production of The Producers he starred in at the time. In the wake of the leaked clip, Hasselhoff issued a statement saying it was recorded by Taylor Ann so that he could see how he behaved while intoxicated and the footage was deliberately released.[97][98] As a result of the video, Hasselhoff's visitation rights with his two daughters were suspended on May 7, 2007, for two weeks until the video's authenticity and distributor were determined. In May 2009, Hasselhoff's attorney, Mel Goldsman, described Hasselhoff as "a recovering alcoholic"

Twin Peaks was simultaneously a cult classic and a major television hit of the late '80s and early '90s. David Lynch's peculiar take on small-town life reeling from the circumstances surrounding the mysterious murder of Laura Palmer captured the imagination of the public around the world.

If there was a face of Twin Peaks, it was Lara Flynn Boyle, who starred in both seasons of the show's short run as Donna Howard, Laura's close friend who becomes obsessed with solving the murder. She didn't, however, star in the movie sequel and she has already refused a role in the new TV series which will air sometime in 2017.

Just like any person who's aged over the decades, Lara Flynn Boyle is no longer the sex siren of her youth. Instead, she's an attractive and distinguished-looking middle-aged woman who has gotten some work done.

It's not difficult to understand how a young beauty might feel the pressure to maintain their looks with surgucal procedures as they age. Lara made the right decision for herself and she looks great for her age.

Geena Davis was a smoking hot property in the 1980s. It seemed like she could do no wrong when Beetlejuice and then Thelma and Louise propelled her to box-office superstardom. For a while in the 90s you could not turn around in a grocery store without seeing Davis and her ex-husband Jeff Goldblum on tabloid covers. Their remake of the horror classic, The Fly, is truly nauseating.

However, the flop Cutthroat Island directed by Renny Harlin, her now ex-husband, was the only real fly in the ointment. The movie was specially designed to be a vehicle to cement Geena's career. It turned out to be a disaster which nearly sunk her instead.

Geena's still looking good these days, especially if you consider that she's in her 60s! Pictured here, the famous actress is fronting for the Women's Sports Foundation's campaign for equality in sports for females.

While there's still a bit of acting in her life, most of Geena's time is now spent in activism. She's set up her own institute to examine gender roles in the media, too. Fun fact, she nearly made the 1999 women's Olympic archery team as one of 300 finalists. Maybe she could play an aging Katniss Everdeen when Disney buys the rights to the Hunger Games?

1987 was a golden year for hard rock music and its undisputed kings were Guns'n'Roses, fronted by the lithe and limber, controversial-but-not-just-for-wearing-bike-shorts-on stage, Axl Rose. The album, "Appetite for Destruction," has sold more than 30 million copies globally and the follow-up "Use Your Illusion" sold another 35 million.

Back then, Rose was famous not only for having an incredible vocal range, but for inciting riots and throwing liquor bottles at fans during live performances. However, the band soon imploded over personal differences and ended up taking a long hiatus before finally releasing the album "Chinese Democracy", which sold far less than expected by their label.

If you're not working all that often, it's easy to start comfort eating. That's apparently what happened to Axl Rose who has gone from the tight-bodied youth of yesteryear to a more age-appropriate body type.

On Twitter, he extols the virtues of Taco Bell, but rock and roll is all about excess, right? An excess of Doritos Cheesy Gordita Crunches backstage may have replaced all the booze of his glory days. He's on his way back though. In 2016 he took over the job of fronting for AC/DC on tour and Guns'n'Roses have reformed and are about to conduct a global tour too. Get it, Axl!

Mark Hamill, A Young Skywalker (Then)

The original Star Wars trilogy was a cultural phenomenon that has inspired generations of filmmakers, and the lead actor was Mark Hamill who played Luke Skywalker.

Mark's success in Star Wars wasn't necessarily a good thing for his career. As one producer bluntly told him, "I don't want Luke Skywalker in my film" The role was simply too iconic for Mark to be cast easily in other movies and he ended up doing mainly voiceover work over the coming decades. You may have heard him as Batman's evil nemesis the Joker in many of the animated versions of the comic from the past few decades.

Who cares what you look like when your only work is off-screen? Mark Hamill let things slide for a bit while because why bother when no-one will see you? And the car crash he endured following the first Star Wars movie probably didn't help things. Those are real scars from the wreck you can see in the sequel, The Empire Strikes Back.

As Star Wars re-emerged for a sequel trilogy and Mark Hamill was asked to reprise the role of Luke Skywalker, Hamill was told to hit the gym and recover some of his former good-looking glory. It definitely worked as he's still viewed as the sex symbol he used to be.

Catherine Bach As A Duke (Then)

There may be no bigger sex symbol of the 1980s than Catherine Bach playing the role of Daisy Duke in Dukes of Hazzard. She was famed for wearing denim hot pants and looking alluring throughout the series in which she proved a foil for the Duke brothers themselves and their escapades battling the hapless Boss Hogg and his underlings.

During the height of her fame, her legs alone were rumored to be insured for $1 million dollars. Imagine the pressure. You could be sued if you cut yourself shaving. The role was reprised for a movie but it was Jessica Simpson who would take on the role of Daisy.

After Dukes of Hazzard, things went downhill for Catherine Bach's acting career. It's possible that the role had left her typecast and prevented other shows and movies from taking up her contract. Another possibility is that she simply accomplished all of her goals as an actor in the entertainment industry and wished to focus more on raising her two daughters.

She's appeared only in low-profile roles ever since. Though she has also launched her own range of jewelry with the Debenhams group of stores in the UK. Her ex-husband, Peter Lopez, shot himself in April 2010, in what appeared to be a suicide.

Boy George was born George Alan O'Dowd, and he headed up one of the biggest pop sensations of the 1980s, Culture Club. Originally discovered by the Sex Pistol's manager Malcolm McLaren, George stood out as a London club kid known for his eccentric style and wild behavior.

Songs such as "Karma Chameleon," "Time (Clock of the Heart)" and "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" sold millions of copies and much of it was due to Boy George's unique look. His androgynous and colorful approach to dressing and presentation made him immediately recognizable to legions of fans throughout the world.

Unfortunately for Boy George, things didn't go well for a long period after the band split up. As he later revealed in interviews, the break up of Culture Club was really the downfall of a romantic relationship between George and Jon Moss, the drummer for the band, as well as a heroin addiction and the tragic loss of their keyboard player from overdose.

This culminated in his serving a substantial prison sentence for imprisoning and then violently assaulting a rent boy. Boy George served his time and is now making something of a comeback. He writes books, designs clothes, is an active photographer and still writes songs. His most recent musical work has been winning acclaim for its honesty and humility.

Cybill Shepherd Moonlighting (Then)

Cybill Shepherd Moonlighting 23

Cybill Shepherd's role in Taxi Driver opposite Robert DeNiro is probably what brought her to the public eye but what cemented that relationship was her role in TV's Moonlighting in the 1980s as Maddie Hayes. Maddie Hayes was the owner of a failing detective agency and Bruce Willis was the reluctant detective brought in to turn it round. The couple's on-screen chemistry was legendary and the series ran for four years as something of a global hit.

Interesting fact: Shepherd Bruce Willis considered having an affair while they worked together, but decided not to in order to avoid bringing any extra drama that could potentially affect the show. As she told Access Hollywood, "I said, We shouldn't,' and then he said, We shouldn't,' and so we didn't… We worked so long together, it was probably better not to"

Her most recent role was in Do You Believe? in 2015, which was a heavily Christian influenced production. Her character was a mother mourning the loss of her daughter. In real life, Shepherd has three children. One of them is the actress and L Word co-star Clementine Ford.

He has also been vocal in his support of the U.S. military in Iraq and Israel in recent years. Willis is married to a model named Emma Heming, and they have two children together. In 2010 he was the eighth highest-grossing actor in North America. Not too shabby.

Kelly Le Brock hit the big time from her first moment on screen. She starred opposite comedy/acting legend Gene Wilder in The Woman in Red. It wasn't surprising that the daughter of a model would herself be a natural in front of the camera!

She then moved on to feature in Weird Science a smash hit teen comedy in 1985. She starred as the fantasy woman created by two teens in a science experiment. It might be safe to say that Whoopi Goldberg's never really been a sex symbol. She's famous for her incredible acting and boisterous personality more than her looks. She's been nominated for 13 Emmys and won at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award.

Her role in The Color Purple about an abused black woman in the Deep South in 1985 brought her critical acclaim. But it was her role in 1990s Ghost that really firmed up her place in the public eye. She went on to star in many, many hit films and shows like Sister Act, Hollywood Squares, and The View.

Whoopi's surely gained a few pounds since the Ghost days. Much of this has been attributed, in the media, to her fondness for a joint or two which can occasionally lead to the munchies. Plus, most of us do gain weight over time… it's just natural.

While Whoopi still acts sometimes, much of her current life is based around LGBT activism. Her "Give a Damn" campaign tries to persuade all members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities to come together with straight people and live equal and fair lives. That's amazing. Things haven't been brilliant in Wayne Newton's private life and in addition to his ever-expanding waistline his finances have become a complete mess. He has spent much of the 2000s in court being sued for various forms of financial mismanagement and it all came to a head in 2012 when he declared bankruptcy.

The worst, from Wayne's perspective, is now over and he's back living in his old house having reached a settlement with his creditors. Things aren't all bad, however. The man known as "Mr. Entertainment" is deeply involved with charities that raise funding for diabetes research. That's wonderful!

John Travolta got his start on the iconic television series Welcome Back, Kotter. But Travolta's career owes much to the smash successes of Saturday Night Fever and Grease in the 1970s. He was young, attractive and could dance like no one else. His posters graced the bedroom walls of millions of teenage girls. It seemed he had it made.

Then his acting career took a substantial hit in the 1980s where it seemed he just couldn't land a starring role and when he did – the films sunk without trace. Luckily, the roles picked back up for Travolta.

Some say that this guy has gone from heartthrob to a large hunk of love. Despite John's career being resurrected in the 1990s thanks particularly to his role in 1994s Pulp Fiction – things have gone a little badly for him in the looks department. As happens to all of us, he's appeared to gain some weight and lose some hair.

Proving that equality cuts both ways, John has been roundly criticized for his appearance in the national media. He's also been trying to prove that he didn't have a sexual relationship with his former pilot, Douglas Gotterba.

In her first major role in Cactus Flower in 1969, Goldie Hawn won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. It was a serious role as Walter Matthau's suicidal fiance. She's best known, however, for her comedic performances and perhaps her best-loved role is that of the eponymous Private Benjamin for which she also won an Academy Award.

She parlayed her good looks and natural blonde into a career that has spanned several decades. Hawn's other film credits include Butterflies Are Free, Housesitter, Shampoo, Death Becomes Her, and First Wives Club. She's been married to fellow actor Kurt Russell since 1983.

Let's be fair about this – Goldie Hawn is now in her 70s and it's pretty hard for anybody to be a total fox in their 70s. She's still with Kurt Russell who she's been in a relationship with since 1983. Most of her time is now spent running the Hawn Foundation which focuses on academic performance improvement for youth. Much of the foundation's work is focused on scientific study to demonstrate improved academic learning strategies.

Hawn's famous gorgeous daughter Kate Hudson closely resembles her mom. The younger blonde starlet will surely look to her mother for advice as she begins to age!

Edward Furlong's star shone brightly from the start. He won Teen Idol and then starred as John Connor in Terminator 2: Judgement Day. His role as a skinhead in American History X was praised for its honesty and condemned for its frightening brutality. Over the years, Furlong also had roles in Pet Sematary Two, American Heart, Detroit Rock City, The Green Hornet, and A Home of Our Own.

His acting career continued through the 90s with mixed success (including another Terminator movie) and he even recorded an album, Hold on Tight, though it was only ever released in Japan.

Then Edward's life spun completely out of control. His career began to fall to pieces in the wake of serious drug and alcohol problems that quickly grew worse and worse.

Edward finally ended up in rehab in October 2000. He said; "I was a heroin and cocaine addict. It was really scary. I don't even think about [partying] anymore. It seems lonely now: running and clubbing and doing coke. I have nightmares about doing hard drugs" His past substance abuse issues definitely show in his face.

Johnny Depp's first role on screen was in Oliver Stone's Platoon but it was a minor supporting part. His big break came with the release of Edward Scissorhands which is often considered a dark romance. His youthful good looks combined with the success of his first lead role ensured that there would be plenty of parts to follow.

His career trajectory has been nothing but positive and he is one of the world's biggest stars. Depp has dated some of the most well-known names in the business, including Stranger Things' Winona Ryder and supermodel Kate Moss. He has two children with his former partner, French model Vanessa Paradis.

Depp's demand is based on his box office success and acting talents more than his face nowadays. This hasn't stopped him from being the number best-paid actor in 2012 or from being inducted as a Disney Legend in 2015. To date his films have grossed more than $7 billion.

These days, Depp might just be as well-known for his legal problems as his once-gorgeous face. His recent (and very public) split from actress Amber Heard was shocking to the former heartthrob's fans.

Sadly, the spin-off was canceled when "Mama Elsa" fell and injured herself. Supposedly, she suffered a brain injury during a fall that took place in her home. It is quite clear to see from this photo that Mama Elsa was once an incredibly attractive woman. Let's see what she looks like now…

Yup, it's those plastic surgeons again and once again a beautiful woman trying to retain her good looks is maimed. Her daughter, Marysol, says that when her mother had her eyelids done in the 1980s it; "gave her hematomas on her eyes for like three years" That's a terrible price to pay for cosmetic surgery for anyone and "Mama Elsa" is more famous for her post-surgery state than her heyday of hotness.

Marysol states that her mother became almost unrecognizable during that time and following her subsequent surgeries, although she doesn't recall Elsa specifically having a facelift during that time.

Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart, otherwise known as the 18th Duchess of Alba, may well be the richest entrant on the list. She was a billionaire and is famed for spending as much on her wedding as the Queen of England spent on hers.

She was also an attractive woman and throughout her life, she was famed for her affairs and romantic associations with numerous men. She also held the distinction of the most titled aristocrat in the world with more than 40 titles. In 2011 she was added to Vanity Fairs International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame.

This is perhaps unkind, but towards the end of her life Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart was still churning through the men (at least according to the Spanish scandals sheets), but we suspect they may have been interested in something other than her good looks by then.

It didn't work though. Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart's final lover (they were married from 2011 until her death) didn't receive a penny in her will and apparently, he was under the impression he was going to make out like a bandit. Fitz-James Stuart also left behind six children and nine grandchildren.

Suzanne Somers became popular for her role as Chrissy Snow in Three's Company, an American TV show based on a British show Man About the House. Strangely, the American version lasted eight seasons and the British one only six. She co-starred on the show with Joyce DeWitt and Jack Ritter, and the show is still a fan favorite to this day.

She then played the role of Carol Lambert in Step-by-Step which confirmed her status as one of America's favorite sitcom actresses and her sultry good looks certainly didn't hurt with that. Step-by-Step ran until 1998.

Fast forward to today and Suzanne Somers is still looking good, possibly too good for a woman who is now 70 years old. She denies having plastic surgery but it seems nearly impossible that there's not been at least a little work done there.

However, she is a firm advocate of holistic and alternative medicine and it's just possible that she's stumbled upon the fountain of youth while researching one of her books on the subject. Somers is a two-time cancer survivor and after her first grueling round of treatments she decided to go the holistic route.

She was also supposed to appear in a Baywatch spin-off series but the series was canceled before it went into production. Before Nicole's Baywatch fame, she was wildly popular as Jamie Powell on the hit sitcom Charles In Charge, alongside teen star Scott Baio.

Since the previous photo was taken, Donatella Versace has had many plastic surgeries, and some say she's gone too far with them. Some unkind commenters have nicknamed her a "human waxwork" According to some top plastic surgeons who have studied photos of her new look, she appears to have undergone a botched facelift along with heavy lip injections.

Her blonde eyebrows certainly aren't helping the overall effect. She's never seemed to embrace the natural look, however, so perhaps she's happy with the outcome. In the past, she's admitted to using Botox but generally credits "tonnes of cream" for the appearance of her skin and hair.

Twelve days after tying the knot in a hush-hush marriage ceremony in Malibu, Pamela Anderson and Jon Peters have decided to uncouple.

A source close to the actress says the pair hadn't yet filed the legal paperwork for a marriage certificate following their Jan. 20 wedding ceremony that was attended by Anderson's two sons and Peters' three daughters and ex-wife Christine Forsyth-Peters.

"I have been moved by the warm reception to Jon and my union," Anderson said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "We would be very grateful for your support as we take some time apart to reevaluate what we want from life and from one another. Life is a journey and love is a process. With that universal truth in mind, we have mutually decided to put off the formalization of our marriage certificate and put our faith in the process. Thank you for respecting our privacy."

Peters didn't respond to a request for comment.
The split was abrupt, with Anderson hopping a flight to her native Canada on Saturday morning, just days after posting a loving shot of herself and Peters on her Instagram Stories.

Although each had been married four times prior, the union seemed promising given that Anderson and Peters had dated one another more than 30 years ago and had reunited in recent months, keeping the relationship under wraps.

Born from Hollywood royalty, Carrie Fisher will forever be known as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy when the then 17-year-old teen would appear as Jabba the Hutt's prisoner in a skimpy bikini, which would catapult her to the top of every man's sexual fantasies during that time! She reprised her role as Princess Leia, albeit an older version as General Leia Organa in later Star Wars franchises. Although the years and time would not be kind to her looks, Carrie has quite the longevity in Hollywood up until her death in 2016, despite her manic depressive diagnosis and subsequent drug addiction.

During appearances on 20/20 and The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive with Stephen Fry, Fisher publicly discussed her diagnosis of bipolar disorder and her addictions to cocaine and prescription medication. She said her drug use was a form of self-medication; she used pain medication such as Percodan to "dial down" the manic aspect of her bipolar disorder. She gave nicknames to her bipolar moods: Roy ("the wild ride of a mood") and Pam ("who stands on the shore and sobs"). "Drugs made me feel more normal", she explained to Psychology Today in 2001. "They contained me." She discussed her 2008 memoir Wishful Drinking and various topics in it with Matt Lauer on NBC's Today that same year, and also revealed that she would have turned down the role of Princess Leia had she realized it would give her the celebrity status that made her parents' lives difficult. This interview was followed by a similar appearance on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on December 12, 2008, where she discussed her electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) treatments. At one point, she received ECT every six weeks to "blow apart the cement" in her brain. In 2014, she said she was no longer receiving the treatment.

In another interview, Fisher revealed that she used cocaine during the filming of The Empire Strikes Back. "Slowly, I realized I was doing a bit more drugs than other people and losing my choice in the matter", she noted. In 1985, after months of sobriety, she accidentally overdosed on a combination of prescription medication and sleeping pills. She was rushed to the hospital, creating the turn of events that led to much of the material in her novel and screenplay, Postcards from the Edge. Asked why she did not take on the role of her story's protagonist, named Suzanne, in the film version, Fisher remarked, "I've already played Suzanne."
